Short Songs and Big Ideas

The prolific bassist and bandleader Mike Watt, of Minutemen and fIREHOSE fame (he’s also on the road this year with Iggy and the Stooges) recently released his third opera, Hyphenated-Man. The 30 short, sharp songs are based on 30 characters painted by Hieronymus Bosch (that’s The Garden of Earthly Delights above) and form a fractured self-portrait of the 53-year-old punk-rock artist confronting middle age. This clip from a show in Athens, Georgia, features the first eight tracks: Arrow-Pierced-Egg-Man, Beak-Holding-Letter-Man, Hammering-Castle-Bird-Man, Bird-In-The-Helmet-Man, Belly-Stabbed-Man, Stuffed-In-The-Drum-Man, Baby-Cradling-Tree-Man, and Hollowed-Out-Man.
